The US Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission, Karl Albrecht, will deliver the opening speech for a 5-day investigative journalism seminar on Monday, June 18, 2012 at the Monrovia YMCA, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
The seminar, which targets 40 senior reporters and editors from both the print and broadcast media, is jointly organized by the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) and the Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy in Monrovia.
The seminar grows out of the critical need to develop and strengthen the
skills of journalists in investigative reporting amidst efforts to promote good governance, human rights, justice and the fight against corruption.
PUL’s President, Peter Quaqua, expressed delight for the training and added that "Investigation is at the heart of journalism, and every journalist must get seized of any available opportunity to learn new techniques to develop their skills to better serve our society."
An American Professor and Director of the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowships in America, Lucinda Fleeson, has arrived in the country to facilitate the seminar. Lucinda teaches at the Merrill College of Journalism, University of Maryland, USA and an award winning journalist of several years.
