As part of the donors quarterly visit to inspect all its projects in Liberia, the Head of Rural Development in Africa at Messerori , Sabina Sulser, recently visited Liberia to inspect projects being sponsored by her Organization, Messerori, Germany , and implemented by the Relief arm of the Catholic Church in Monrovia Archdiocese, CARITAS.
Messerori, Germany, is sponsoring Agriculture projects in Bomi, Gbapolu, and Grand Cape Mount Counties, implemented by CARITAS Monrovia of the Catholic Archdiocese of Monrovia.
The Acting Head of Caritas Monrovia Emerson Tamba led the Messerori Representative to inspect various projects in the three Counties. In conversation with Farmers in the three Counties, the Farmers lauded Messerori for giving the opportunity to learn a new type of farming which is the subsistence farming in the three Counties.
The farmers said with the new farming system being introduced, they are able acquire products on a monthly basis that are sold in the market to pay their children's school fees.
They said unlike the former farming system that they harvest once a year, the new type harvests every month. The Farmers said the new type of farming being introduced makes it easier for their work.
They said they can now farm to a spot for years because at the end of every harvest they are immediately able to plant another crop.
CARITAS Monrovia, through the sponsorship of Messerori, has trained the Farmers of the three Counties to do subsistence farming in planting rubber, palm, pineapples, pepper, bitter balls, piggery and cassava.
The planting of rubber started in 2006 and some farmers will begin tapping their rubber by next year 2013.
In response, the Representative from Messerori lauded CARITAS Monrovia and the farmers for the job well done in the implementation of the projects.
Madam Sulser said she was impressed with the implementation of the projects that were ear marked by her organization.
She said with the work done so far her organization will find more money to sustain the projects in these three Counties and to include more farmers who are interested in joining the program. She called on other International Organizations involve in Agriculture and the Agriculture Ministry to work along with Caritas in implementing Agriculture projects in the Country.
The Acting Head of CARITAS Emerson Tamba told Madam Sabina Sulser that CARITAS Liberia is always willing to work with Messerori Germany in implementing their projects in Liberia.
Mr. Tamba said there are 1,326 farmers benefiting from the subsistence Agriculture project in the three Counties.
Meanwhile, the Messerori representative said that the money is ready for the construction of seven bridges between Gbankai and Belle Fasamah in the Belleh District, Gbarpolu County. She said the project will be implemented by CARITAS Monrovia.
