Vice President Joseph N. Boakai carrying on the ground breaking exercise Vice President Joseph N. Boakai has reaffirmed government's commitment to improving road network in Nimba County and the rest of the country.
Boakai made the disclosure on Monday when he broke ground for the construction of over 105.57km of feeder in Sanniqullie.
Addressing citizens of the County during a well attended indoor program marking the ceremony, Boakai noted that the people of the county deserve such development, because, according to him, it was in Sanniquallie the Organization of African Unity (OAU) now called Africa Union was established.
Veep Boakai has meanwhile called on contractors who are expected to implement the projects not to compromise quality and sounded a very strong caveat that the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf regime will not hesitate to terminate the services of defaulting contractors.
For his part, Public Works Minister, Attorney Samuel Kofi Woods, described the ground breaking as a remarkable progress.
Wood asserted that as a former student leader his quest for development in the County started as far back as 1986 when he was invited to organize the student movement in Sanniquallie under the banner of the Liberia National Student Union (LINSU).
Woods noted that government was committed to providing quality road network for the people of Nimba County.
According to him, when government needed help, the people of Nimba used their machines to maintain critical areas on major highways connecting the county, a gesture he described as timely and necessary for collective national development.
The Infrastructure minister reiterated the commitment of his administration to closely monitor the implementation of road projects across the country to the fullest and challenged the contractors to use the money for the intended purpose, noting that Liberia is in the era of transparency and accountability.
“You have to list the amount for each contract and share with the residents and community members so that they are aware of what's allocated for each project as a way of making them to take ownership of the project”, Minister Woods said. “Nonperforming contractors,” he warned, “will be blacklisted and if possible, taking to court.”
He appealed to the contractors to also include women in their workforce, particularly during the implementation of those projects.
Meanwhile, Woods has assured the people of Nimba that the contract for the Gbarnga to Ganta-Guinea border road project would be signed early next year. Some of the citizens thanked SIDA for their contribution to Liberia's recovery process. The project is being funded by the Swedish government.
