Madam Mahn along with another midwife As the Government of Liberia and partners strive to reduce cases of maternal death, which is death during child-birth, it appears that their goal is still plagued with numerous challenges.

According to Madam Helena Mahn, a midwife, has indicated to this paper that recently, some midwives who work at a clinic in Graye Town, in the Doe Administrative District in Nimba County lack a safe delivery place for women especially those  in liver pain, something that is a serious problem for pregnant women in the district.

Helena Mahn, said they find it difficult to cope with the situation due to the huge number of pregnant women that come to the place for delivery. She added: “As you may know, the government has told us not to do delivery at home. So as a result, all the women from the nearby towns and villages come to Graye town here for safe delivery, because only here you can find health center. The health center here doesn't however have enough place to host all of those who come for delivery,” Madam Mahn stated.

Madam Mahn further stated that: “This thing that  I am telling you is very serious, as it has caused problems for most of our women and has also made some of them to lose their children while giving birth. Just imagine a pregnant woman or somebody that is in pain, and having to walk two to three hours before getting here. It is very dangerous.”

She asserted: “But if we can have adequate accommodation facilities here at the clinic that can host them for about three to four days, they are welcome to come ahead of time,” Madam Mahn asserted. She further added that “besides the delivery house, sometimes there are no drugs for people who come here for treatment.”

Madam Mahn is therefore calling on the government to complete the construction of the delivery house attached to the clinic that was started by former Representative Edwin Gaye, but is yet to be completed.
