Lofa County's Assistant Superintendent for Development Klubo Jones has applauded the Ministry of Public Works for initiating several road development projects in the county and noted that these projects will definitely help to change the lives of the people.
Madam Jones said roads were very critical to the development of the county and challenged Lofans to fully infrastructure projects that will fully open the county.
“We are happy for the road projects in this county Mr. Minister,” she told Public Works Minister Samuel Kofi Woods recently during his weeklong inspection, grounding breaking and dedication of road projects in the county.
“We are happy for development and we need to go into development,” the county's first female development superintendent noted. “We should all support what is taking place in this county; it is in our own interest and we appreciate it,” she stated in Kolbla City (Kolahun).
Dozens of other citizens including chiefs, youth and women groups including Kolahun District Commissioner Morris Tamba expressed gratitude to the government, through the Minister Woods for responding the needs of Lofans who are in dire need of roads to improve their lives.
“We are happy to see the Minister leaving his family during this Christmas season to see about our roads,” reappointed Commissioner Tamba noted. “Our people are happy and we will work with you to make sure Kolahun District and Lofa in general benefit from development,” he added.
Woods told the gathering that he was in Lofa to, along with Vice President Boakai, break ground for the pavement of Voinjama City's streets, dedicate completion of six feeder roads and to break ground for the rehabilitation of three others.
He said the Government of Liberia, through the Liberian Swedish Feeder Road project is committed to ensuring that Liberians in the leeward counties have access to their various communities and ease their transportation burden.
The Liberian Swedish Feeder Road Project is a model of Liberia's rural road infrastructural development and the rehabilitation of feeder roads.
The projects' overall goal is to contribute to the reduction of poverty in the country and to ensure a sustainable road access in communities in Lofa, Bong and Nimba Counties and to enhance their livelihood potentials in the agriculture sector, Minister Woods emphasized.
The Public Works boss said the project includes the rehabilitation of 500km of roads by 2014 to increase the Government of Liberia feeder road management capacity.
Due to these interventions, he said it is expected that several benefits would accrue. “They include significant reduction in travel time, cost of transportation, increased access for road users, pointing out that for more than ten years, the Lawalazu to Vezela road was inaccessible to motorist transport as a result of bridge failure.
“It is now an 18 meter reinforced concrete bridge which facilitates travels of people and goods between Foya, Kolahun, Vezela, Lawalazu and Voinjama,” Minister Woods explained.
